Overcoming Songwriting Obstacles

It took me 10 to 15 years before I was happy with my songwriting, granted I started when I was 10 years old, but it was up to me to source knowledge and sourcing knowledge takes a long time. Once I worked out how to do it though, everything fell into place.

There were no courses when I started songwriting. That’s why I put together The Art of Songwriting.

I wanted to take all my knowledge, trials and tribulations and distill this into an easy to understand course that enabled quick and easy results without the need for extensive theory knowledge.

Often I’d find I’d sit down to write a song and come up with a great verse but couldn’t find the chorus anywhere. I’d try different chord combinations but nothing seemed to work. I’d try different melodies but they’d either sound weak or sound like something I’d heard before.

My inner critic would tell me that most of what I was writing was rubbish and wouldn’t stand the test of time.

Or worst of all, I’d sit down to write and nothing would happen. There’s not a songwriter, novelist, playwrite or painter that doesn’t fear this scenario.

Finally I found ways to overcome all of these obstacles. I found I was releasing albums and receiving international acclaim. Rolling Stone would give me 4 stars, Time Out Magazine would give me 4.5 stars. The EG would give me 4 stars. None of my albums have ever received less than 4 stars.

Recently I made The Art of Songwriting which covers every possible element that holds you back. I didn’t do the course to make money primarily, I did it first and foremost to share my knowledge.

I love sharing my knowledge and seeing people’s faces light up when they discover the way to do something – finish that song, start that song (!), write the perfect chorus, come up with a great lyric, tease a melody out.

Have a look and see what you think

The course is designed for anyone. It’s for those who want to strive for critical acclaim and it’s also designed for those who just want to write for their own enjoyment.

I do appreciate the acclaim I’ve received over the years, but the most important thing for me is that I enjoy the songwriting process. I get a high when I come up with that chorus or chord change and I very rarely suffer any lows. If I do I always know a way around it. It’s great!

If you have any questions don’t hestitate to contact me and until next time, happy songwriting!

Cheers,
